Tourism Satellite
Kansas Travel and Tourism Division has contracted with Global Insight to provide a Tourism Satellite Account to measure the economic impact of travel and tourism on the Kansas economy. 

Program Description

Tourism Satellite Accounts are the United Nations’ approved system for measuring the economic impact of tourism and provide a complete picture of the Kansas industry. This reporting enables us to quantify and track the sector's impact on the rest of the economy and determine the travel and tourism industry’s importance for Kansas’ vitality.

Notable for the 2009 Report
Tourism Satellite Account study shows Kansas tourism has a 5.46 billion dollar impact to the Kansas economy.

The study was conducted by IHS Global Insight which is the international standard used to measure the contribution of tourism to the economy.

The study allows the state to determine the following:

• If we are spending enough on tourism promotion and infrastructure

• What are the best economic development targets

• What is our return on investment for public tourism spending

• How we can benchmark ourselves against competitor destinations

• How to communicate the full value of tourism to policy makers, businesses and citizens.

• In 2009, 1 of every 9 Kansas Citizens owes his/her job to tourism (Slide 14)

• Average spend-per-visitor was $238 in 2009 (Slide 9)

• Tourism Total Impact: $5.46 billion (Slide 29)

• Kansas Tourism industry accounts for 148,945 Kansas jobs (Slide 29)

• Kansas had 30.21 million person stays in 2009, generating $7.2 billion in expenditures. (Slide 14)

• If tourism didn't exist, each household would have to pay about $876 more in taxes in order to maintain the current level of state and local tax receipts. (Slide 26) 

• Every 203 visitors creates a new job in Kansas. (Slide 30)

• $2.56 billion in wages & salaries (direct impact) was generated by core travel & tourism in 2009) (Slide 17)
